The history of backaldrin is closely linked to its owners and founders, the Augendopler family. It is a story peppered with new baking ideas, as well as many moments of success, both great and small.

backaldrin establishes the backaldrin Vertriebs.ges.m.b.H. in Germany.
In search of a production site, the Augendopler family discovers a mill in Upper Austrian Asten. It is located in the province where the Augendoplers have their roots and is exactly where the valuable ingredients for backaldrin products are from. The site in Asten, with its good transport connections, is developed into a modern corporate head office.
backaldrin introduces the Original Kornspitz, which is today a global classic in the bread roll range.
backaldrin lays the groundwork for expansion into Eastern Europe. Initially representative officers and later subsidiaries are set up in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Hungary. Other countries follow: Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus.
backaldrin proves its ingenuity with organic products. The Kornspitz and other products are now also available in organic quality. Many more follow.
At the iba trade fair, backaldrin makes a name for itself with the bread brand My Grainbread. The innovative product is already honoured at the world premiere.
backaldrin establishes its own subsidiary in Italy.
In Asten, backaldrin opens the House of Bread, a unique meeting place for the international baking community.
Backaldrin establishes a subsidiary in Poland.
At the ÖBA trade fair, backaldrin presents its new brand, PURPUR. The secrets of purple wheat are revealed.
backaldrin is the largest individual exhibitor at the most important international trade fair for bakers and confectioners – the iba.
In addition to Asten in Austria, backaldrin opens its second production facility in Amman, the capital city of Jordan. Tailor-made products for the Arab world and Africa.
On 31 May, backaldrin opens the House of Bread, called “Dom Chleba” in Russian, on the outskirts of the Russian capital of Moscow. It is a further milestone for backaldrin in Russia, where the company has been doing business since 1995.
backaldrin puts a modern high-rack warehouse into operation at its site in Asten. With this investment into the future, the family business creates necessary storage capacity.
The backaldrin branch in the Czech Republic and the production site in Jordan are expanded.
The new innovation and research centre is opened in spring 2013, creating 50 new jobs in Asten in the medium term, particularly in the field of research and development.
The popular Kornspitz celebrates its 30th anniversary. After its creation in 1984, it quickly conquered people’s breadbaskets, breakfast tables and hearts.
After a successful 20-year partnership, Swiss company Hauser & Cie AG Neumühle Töss hands over the reins of the semi-finished bakery and confectionery products business to backaldrin. With this succession plan, the Hauser and backaldrin products are guaranteed to be found on the Swiss market for decades to come.
New locations with the opening of production sites in Mexico and South Africa. The company is represented by subsidiaries in 16 countries and offers a growing international work environment.
backaldrin has enjoyed a close relationship with the Russian market for more than 20 years. On 13 October the seventh production site worldwide was opened near Moscow. With this new proximity to customers, the rising demand can be better satisfied at the same time as creating a hub for the Eurasian space.
At the company headquarters in Asten, the PANEUM – Wunderkammer des Brotes, with its exhibition based on bread and bakery, has been open to visitors since October. It is a place where bread, its history and its future can be discussed, researched and contemplated.
backaldrin has been active in the Chinese market since 2001, and with its Guangzhou-based subsidiary, backaldrin Guangzhou Food Co. Ltd., since 2018. The subsidiary is responsible for the distribution of backaldrin products in China. In 2019, the company opened its own production facility as well as a bakery with a training centre at the new location.
This technology optimises the production of Danish pastries and laminated baked goods by saving valuable time and space while at the same time enhancing product quality.
backaldrin celebrated its 60th anniversary. From its beginnings in Asten, through Bavaria, and on to the world, the company has shaped the baking industry with innovations, gained attention through sports sponsorship, and engaged in art and social projects beyond its core business.

backaldrin presents what is probably the world's heaviest Kornspitz. The granite artwork
was unveiled at the end of January in front of the main entrance to the company headquarters in Asten by Kornspitz inventor Peter Augendopler and artist Erwin Wurm.
Long-standing managing director Harald Deller will step into the role of general director from January 2025 and, together with the extended management team, will drive forward the company's strategic development. Through this restructuring, backaldrin is ensuring the transfer of central areas of responsibility in the long term and committing to continuous development.
