THE PATH TO MASTERY

In the past, the path to becoming a master baker often involved hiking and gaining experience. Journeymen bakers had to work in distant cities for a few years before they were able to take the master craftsmanship exam.

Each journeyman kept a travel journal with personal data, descriptions, certificate and stamps of the towns visited. One such journal belonged to Johann Jacob Ludewig, a white bread journeyman from Kassel. His hiking journal can be seen in the PANEUM as the Object of the Month for October.

Between May 1839 and November 1843, Ludewig worked in various cities such as Mainz, Stuttgart, Dresden, Berlin and Hamburg. Each entry in his travel journal was stamped with the city seal. This journal also has a cover picture of Kassel and excerpts of the Hessian guild regulations. One more reason to visit the PANEUM in October - e.g. during the Long Night of Museums.
