backaldrin earns top ratings
Excellent results from IFS and EcoVadis
A year has twelve months, but for Thomas Leitner, Head of Certification and Sustainability Management at backaldrin, and his team, it could gladly be more.
His departmentâs calendar is packed with numerous audits, inspections, and visits.

âWe have ten certification audits per year. In addition, there is also a remote assessment with EcoVadis in the area of sustainability, as well as other regulatory, customer, and supplier audits. When we have finished all the audits, we review the results, but thenget right back to our desks to prepare for the next yearâs audit"
Thomas Leitner
Befittingly, the year began with the three-day IFS audit at the end of January 2025. This is the largest audit in backaldrinâs cycle. While other audit visits inspect and evaluate individual raw materials, the IFS audit examines the entire value creation and management process. All processes are evaluated, from receipt of an order, through production, to outgoing goods.Through random checks, systems are scrutinised, and possible sources of error investigated. The IFS catalogue of requirements includes around 240 points that Thomas Leitner and his team have to prepare. The evaluation ranges from positive points to point deductions. At the end, an overall score is calculated, which is then expressed as a percentage and used as the result.
In the 2025 IFS audit, backaldrin impressed with an outstanding rating of 98.5 percent.
âThe excellent rating in the IFS audit is an important indicator of our work â both internally and in terms of our collaboration with our customers and partners.Thatâs why we are proud of this record result for backaldrin"
Wolfgang Mayer (backaldrin Managing Director)
Silver medal in the EcoVadis sustainability ranking
The evaluation by EcoVadis, the worldâs largest and most reliable provider of sustainable rankings, followed at the beginning of March. Taking part for the second time, backaldrin improved from a bronze to a silver medal, and is now among the top 10 percent of the companies evaluated. In the "manufacture of other food products" division, the Asten-based baking ingredients manufacturer even ranks in the top fourpercent. Further top performances were achieved in the areas of âSustainable Procurementâ and âEnvironmentâ (both top six percent), âLabor and Human Rightsâ (top three percent), andâEthicsâ (top eight percent)
"At backaldrin, we always strive to excel with top performances in all our areas of activity. The EcoVadis Silver Medal is thereward for our tireless commitment to sustainability. We arealready looking ahead to confirm this performance in the futureand to continue improving sustainably

The next audits are already on their way: Next up is a quadruple audit, which will include AMA, BIO, CibusTrace, and oGt.Rainforest Alliance, Halal/Kosher, and KAT audits will follow mid-year, and then preparations for the 2026 audits will begin.Particularly exciting is the unannounced IFS audit, which could take place at any time from mid-October 2025. This presents another special challenge for Thomas Leitner and his team when it comes to the next top ratings.
