BREAD STAMP

Stamps have been used to mark bread for more than 1,500 years. They were used to distinguish bread produced in communal bakeries and to provide information about the type of bread and its weight.

Theodor, Bishop of Mopsuestia, had his loaves marked with the sole-shaped stamp that can be seen in the PANEUM as the object of the month for January. On closer inspection, fish can also be seen on it - a symbolism typical of early Christianity.
