A bakery for orphans backaldrin helps people to help themselves
For the long-term financing of a charitable project, a bakery in the slums of Africa is being built, amongst other things, with the help of sponsors. backaldrin is also helping out.
“Hands of Care” founded by the Fransiscan nun Lydia Pardeller has been working since 2006 to ensure that street kids and orphans from Nairobi are given an education. At the beginning of November Stefan Hutter, backaldrin’s Managing Director for Production and Technology, travelled to Nairobi on behalf of backaldrin together with Otto Hirsch, a voluntary aid worker for the project, and Angela Orthner, former President of Upper Austria’s State Parliament.
Starting next year 3,000 children from the slums will benefit from an assured schooling and vocational training, for example to become a professional baker. backaldrin will supply the required equipment, for example two baking ovens and the necessary expertise. The first training courses for baking will already be launched in January 2012. At first ten young people will start their period of apprenticeship. Two teachers who were in turn trained by Austrian bakers will be available to instruct the young students.
