The backaldrin Story

Real success stories are just as unique as exciting, and are written by remarkable entrepreneurs. The backaldrin story is closely tied to the Augendopler family, filled with new baking ideas, many bigger and smaller successes. Right now we take a look at the key milestones:


2011


New subsidiaries. Turkey and Saudi Arabia are further international locations, where backaldrin is successfully represented. 

2010


Developments. The backaldrin subsidiary in Czech Republic and the production facility in Jordan are expanded.

2009


New markets. backaldrin establishes a subsidiary in Poland.

2008


More room for Kornspitz & Co. backaldrin puts a modern high rack warehouse into operation at its location in Asten, Austria. These future-oriented investments will ensure that the family-owned company has the necessary storage space up until 2011.

2007


Future markets open up new opportunities. backaldrin establishes subsidiaries in Brazil and the USA, and thus penetrates important new markets.

"Dom Chleba" in the world’s largest country. On May 31st, backaldrin opens "The House of Bread" at the edge of the Russian capital of Moscow, called "Dom Chleba" in Russian. Another further milestone for backaldrin in Russia, where the company has been doing business since 1995. 

2006


One billion Kornspitz grain rolls. The Kornspitz, Europe’s most successful brand-name roll, is baked and enjoyed more than 1 billion times by people in 59 countries around the world.

Biggest single exhibitor on the world market for baking. backaldrin has the biggest single stand at iba, the most important international trade fair for bakers and confectioners.

Production facility in Jordan. backaldrin opens its second production facility in the Jordanian capital city of Amman, in addition to Asten, Austria. Tailor-made products for the Arab World and Africa.

2005


PURPUR is unveiled to the world of baking. At the specialized trade fair ÖBA, backaldrin presents its new brand, PURPUR (purple wheat). The secrets of purple wheat are revealed.

2003


The House of Bread in Asten sets new standards. backaldrin opens its House of Bread in Asten, a unique meeting place for the international baking community.

backaldrin International is founded. The international business activities of backaldrin are bundled in a separate subsidiary, backaldrin International GmbH.

Sweden bakes with backaldrin products. backaldrin sets up its own subsidiary in Sweden.

2000


Innovations: Mein Kornbrot (My Grain Bread). At iba, backaldrin attracts considerable attention with its bread brand "Mein Kornbrot". This product innovation was already granted prizes on the occasion of its world premiere.

Market entry in Italy. backaldrin sets up its own subsidiary in Italy.

1995


Pioneer work in organic foods. backaldrin also displays its innovative talent and entrepreneurial spirit with organic products. Organic versions of the Kornspitz grain roll and other products are launched. Many other natural, organic products are added to the product portfolio.

1990 und 1991


backaldrin in Eastern Europe. backaldrin lays the groundwork for its expansion to Eastern Europe. It sets up representative offices and later subsidiaries in the Czech Republic/Slovakia and Hungary. Later, the company expands to Bulgaria, Poland, Russia, the Ukraine and Belarus. 

1984


A large step forward for backaldrin and the global baking community. The Kornspitz, which is to become Europe’s most successful brand-name roll, is unveiled at the ÖBA trade fair. Each year, the Kornspitz is eaten more than one billion times. 

1968


Move to Germany. backaldrin establishes backaldrin Vertriebs.ges.m.b.H. in Germany.

Moving forward to the roots. Looking for a production site, the Augendopler family discovers a mill in the Upper Austrian town of Asten. It is located in the province where the Augendoplers have their roots, and precisely where the valuable ingredients for backaldrin products come – in the midst of wavy fields of grain. Asten with its excellent transport links is built and expanded to become a modern corporate headquarters.  

1964


Every beginning isn’t hard. Alois Augendopler, his wife Juliana and his son Peter spontaneously decide to produce baking ingredients themselves, and establish a company. The backaldrin story begins.
